NUS scientists from the Institute for Health Innovation & Technology and the Department of Biomedical Engineering have invented a powerful tool that captures data on immune cell response at a single-cell level. This groundbreaking technique will accelerate the discovery of new immunotherapies to treat diseases such as cancer, autoimmune disorders, and infectious diseases.

NUS Cities, an interdisciplinary centre based in the NUS College of Design and Engineering and the Urban Land Institute Asia Pacific, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 31 May to promote joint research and education activities in the areas of urban planning, management of cities and net-zero buildings. The agreement will allow students to leverage on the experience of industry practitioners as mentors for their projects or skill development.

Four NUS alumnae – Ms Man Jing Kong, Ms Pamela Low, Ms Sam Shu Qin and Ms Samantha Thian, were among the recipients of Conservation International Singapore’s inaugural “10 for Zero Awards” for their contributions to conservation efforts and environmental causes. They will join a youth network that offers mentorship and coaching from global conservation experts.

In April, a group of 19 students from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, College of Design and Engineering, and Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences embarked on a 12-day Study Trips for Engagement & EnRichment (STEER) programme to Alappuzha, Darjeeling and Kolkata in India. This maiden post-COVID STEER expedition saw students engaging the local communities to learn about public health issues on the ground, the effects of climate change, and the livelihood challenges faced by the people there.

Provost’s Chair Professor Sing Tien Foo from the Department of Real Estate at NUS Business School suggests how this can be done while reducing the carbon footprint of offices.
There has been quite a hype over artificial intelligence (AI) platforms such as ChatGPT, especially in Singapore. Carl Skadian, Senior Associate Director at the Middle East Institute at NUS, acknowledges that while the potential of AI applications to do good is great, so is their capacity for harm in the wrong hands. He urges local lawmakers to take a pause and consider setting up of safeguards to regulate AI.
